The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared B.1.1.529 a variant of concern. Experts see this swift soar from being a “Variant of Interest” (VoI) to a “Variant of Concern” (VoC) as a worrying issue, since the distinction between the two is wide-ranging and important.

As in comparison with variant of curiosity, variant of concern is linked to “an increase in transmissibility, more severe disease (e.g., increased hospitalizations or deaths), significant reduction in neutralization by antibodies generated during previous infection or vaccination, reduced effectiveness of treatments or vaccines, or diagnostic detection failures,” as per the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
