Eremozoic, Grove Square Galleries’s first exhibition within the photographic medium, will current a brand new collection by artist Jim Naughten, whose vibrant digital works confront our modern-day disconnection from the atmosphere.
Naughten’s putting imaginative and prescient goals to spotlight the perilous state of the pure world. Trained in pictures and portray, he combines each backgrounds in a follow he refers to as “digital painting”, utilizing digital enhancement programmes to conjure worlds that really feel acquainted but unusual. Using fictional fantasy of our pure atmosphere, he alerts us to its speedy disappearance and our rising estrangement.
At the center of Naughten’s work is a robust curiosity in scientific and organic principle, as mirrored within the exhibition title. Eremozoic is a time period coined by biologist and author E O Wilson to explain in the present day’s period of the Earth’s growth, characterised by a interval of mass extinction induced by human exercise. The Eremozoic Age is alternatively known as “The Age of Loneliness”; this sense of dislocation is captured in Naughten’s depiction of nature as an unfamiliar realm.
Inspired by dioramas of animal types present in pure historical past museums, Naughten extrapolates these photographs and reimagines them in digital, defamiliarised and unrealistic contexts. He attracts consideration to our rose-tinted view of the way forward for the pure world by exoticising his landscapes with a heightened, synthetic color palette and his approach evokes a mode near magic realism, through which the boundary between truth and fiction, creativeness and actuality, turns into blurred.
“Eremozoic is a continuation of my practice but undoubtedly my most important project to date,” says the artist. “I’m interested in how, in the evolutionary blink of an eye, humans have come to dominate and overwhelm the planet and how far our relationship with the natural world has fundamentally and dangerously shifted from that of our ancestors.
“I hope the work will create awareness and discourse about this disconnection, our fictionalised ideas about nature and possibilities for positive change.”
Dazzling us with new views on our relationship with nature, Jim Naughten’s Eremozoic presents an attention grabbing physique of labor that encourages us to look – and assume – twice.
Eremozoic, a solo exhibition by Jim Naughten will probably be operating at Grove Square Galleries from 7 October – 18 November 2021
